Romance FC are trying to change the culture and stigma around football. That’s a big ambition, but for the past 6 years they have used football to build a strong community of female and non-binary athletes, with the goal of using the beautiful game to create opportunities both on and off the field.
Football is one of the most accessible sports in the world, all you need is a ball, yet many women experience exclusion and are often discouraged from playing. Romance FC is motivated to make football inclusive and build safe, meaningful social spaces where common interests and different perspectives can help transform the game at its roots.
Every Sunday and Wednesday the players who make up the Romance FC football team get together to practice and enjoy time outside. Starting off small, they have grown to 80 members, from those who are regulars to those who stand at the sideline and provide support, all are welcome.
They are looking to make London the most vibrant community of women's grassroot football and give a platform to the underrepresented voices to challenge the outdated status quo in football.
